Sporting Facilities in Barbados  

  • Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, is a multi purpose gymnasium. It is one of the most modern sporting facilities in the Caribbean with full air-conditioning and seating for 4,000 patrons. The indoor facility is designed to cater to twelve sporting disciplines: Table tennis, volleyball, weight-lifting, bodybuilding, boxing , basketball, judo, karate, badminton, gymnastics, handball and netball. There is a modern sauna and massage rooms for male and female athletes, and a medical room. The gym is fitted with two-timing and electronic scoreboards which are programmed to show international time, same time, correct game and scoring data for basketball games. The sports complex also has an artificial hockey turf and is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean region.
  • Aquatic Centre, is located in the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex and is designed for competitive swimming. It is an Olympic size pool that can be used for both short course and long course laps. Daktronic timing equipment is installed, starting blocks and anti-turbulence lane markers are of international standard. There is a covered spectator’s stand that seats 800 and runs the length of the 50 meter pool. Swim teams from Canada, the UK, Sweden and the USA have travelled to Barbados to use the outdoor pool for training purposes during the winter season. The teams are representative of clubs, universities, colleges and national swim teams.
  • Astroturf (Field Hockey) located in the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex and has hosted four International Field Hockey Tournaments.
  • Basketball, the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex is an ideal location for basketball tournaments. The wood flooring is of NBA standards with maple parquet timber with concealed rubber grommets to give a slight spring to absorb the impact and reduce pressure on the athlete’s joints. College and University Basketball Teams including Ryerson University and George Brown College have used the facility for training tournaments that were played against Barbadian basketball teams.
  • Barbados National Stadium (Track & Field, Cycling, Soccer), has a 400m eight-lane rubberized track and a 500m cycling track. There are five covered spectator stands that provide seating for 5000 persons. The stadium provides facilities for soccer, hockey, cycling, boxing, shooting, netball and track & field events.
